Of late, I have been pondering the amazing occurrences of healing and miracles using energy work that are being documented around the world. What exactly is “energy” and where does it come from? Is it from God or the devil? Or does it just exist?
These questions are of utmost importance as we know that we are now in the Last Days and many, even the very elect, may be deceived by great signs and miracles performed by false prophets (Matt 24:24).
Yet, on the other hand, we are told that great miracles and healing will take place as God’s people turn to Him during the coming times of tribulation. How can we discern the good from the evil?
Many in the church believe that these miracles and healing will only happen within the confines of men who hold the priesthood. From whence comes the power that others use, that is outside this priesthood power? And what of women in the church that possess the gift of healing, do they operate under the authority of the priesthood power?
As I have pondered these many questions, certain things have been brought to my awareness and, I believe, have brought me to a greater understanding of what energy is and how we can tell if one is using it appropriately and with the power of God.
So what exactly is energy? In this National Geographic article on dark matter and energy it says:
The visible universe—including Earth, the sun, other stars, and galaxies—is made of protons, neutrons, and electrons bundled together into atoms. Perhaps one of the most surprising discoveries of the 20th century was that this ordinary, or baryonic, matter makes up less than 5 percent of the mass of the universe.
The rest of the universe appears to be made of a mysterious, invisible substance called dark matter (25 percent) and a force that repels gravity known as dark energy (70 percent).
The name “dark” was chosen, not because the energy or matter is actually dark, but because scientists cannot see it, do not understand hardly anything about it, and don’t know “why it exists in the first place”. The last paraphrase, as well as the following two paragraphs are also taken from the National Geographic article:
Scientists now think that the accelerated expansion of the universe is driven by a kind of repulsive force generated by quantum fluctuations in otherwise "empty" space. What's more, the force seems to be growing stronger as the universe expands. For lack of a better name, scientists call this mysterious force dark energy.
Unlike for dark matter, scientists have no plausible explanation for dark energy. According to one idea, dark energy is a fifth and previously unknown type of fundamental force called quintessence, which fills the universe like a fluid.
According to scientists, up to 95% of the weight of our universe is made up of a combination of dark matter and energy. That means there is a whole lot of something that is in our world and universe, that we know virtually nothing about!
I would like to suggest something here...What words do we use to describe the feeling of sin?(weighed down) Or, alternatively, we feel a "weight" has been lifted when we repent, or we feel like we are "carrying the weight of the world", or we feel "burdened" by stress.…Perhaps this "weight" is actually something of real substance that we just do not have instrumentation to measure. Our bodies, however, may sense the very real emotional weight that is carried with anger, depression, anxiety, sin, and grief, or the incredible lightness of repentance, joy, enlightenment, gratitude, and love. Could this not be the “energy” that possibly makes up to 70% of the unseen weight of our universe?
In understanding the use of energy, let us begin with the fundamental truth that we are all sons of Adam or daughters of Eve and as such, we have been given dominion over all the earth (Gen 1:26) and everything in it. Truly ALL that God has placed here at our disposal on the this earth is within our power to manipulate...for righteous OR unrighteous purposes. There are things to act, and things to be acted upon as well as opposition in all things, as discussed in the following verses:
2 Nephi 2:14 And now, my sons, I speak unto you these things for your profit and learning; for there is a God, and he hath created all things, both the heavens and the earth, and all things that in them are, both things to act and things to be acted upon.
15 And to bring about his eternal purposes in the end of man, after he had created our first parents, and the beasts of the field and the fowls of the air, and in fine, all things which are created, it must needs be that there was an opposition; even the forbidden fruit in opposition to the tree of life; the one being sweet and the other bitter.
16 Wherefore, the Lord God gave unto man that he should act for himself. Wherefore, man could not act for himself save it should be that he was enticed by the one or the other.
I have come to believe that energy, as part of the creation, falls within the category of something to be “acted upon” and something over which we have dominion. It is neither inherently good or evil. Man (or woman) in the usage of this energy is going to be enticed by either the force of good or the force of evil.
I want to turn now to the use of this energy that scientists say is real, and how it relates to the gift of healing and miracles.
We believe in the literal gift of healing and miracles (Article of Faith #7, Corinthians 12:9) and these gifts are not subject to be used by only those that hold the priesthood keys, nor is it only allowed to be used by those within Christ’s church - These are gifts that God can choose to give to any of His beloved children (man or woman), through the Spirit, and they have agency to use these gifts for good or ill.
Thankfully, Moroni tells us how we may judge whether or not something is of God and is good. Therefore we may use this formula to ascertain if someone is using "energy" for the use of good (of God) or for evil purposes (of the devil).
Moroni 7:12 Wherefore, all things which are good cometh of God; and that which is evil cometh of the devil; for the devil is an enemy unto God, and fighteth against him continually, and inviteth and enticeth to sin, and to do that which is evil continually.
13 But behold, that which is of God inviteth and enticeth to do good continually; wherefore, every thing which inviteth and enticeth to do good, and to love God, and to serve him, is inspired of God.
14 Wherefore, take heed, my beloved brethren, that ye do not judge that which is evil to be of God, or that which is good and of God to be of the devil.
I find great comfort in the fact that Moroni makes sure to tell us to “take heed” in judging so that we do not mistakenly believe something of God is of the devil or vice versa.
We learn from Alma how best to "take heed". He suggests experimenting by planting the seed, nourishing it, and not neglecting it. Should we choose never to plant the seed, we are in danger of having “barren” ground, and we will never experience the enlightenment and knowledge that comes from planting a "good” seed, nor will we have the surety of knowing that a "bad" seed did not grow.
Alma 32:38 But if ye neglect the tree, and take no thought for its nourishment, behold it will not get any root; and when the heat of the sun cometh and scorcheth it, because it hath no root it withers away, and ye pluck it up and cast it out.
39 Now, this is not because the seed was not good, neither is it because the fruit thereof would not be desirable; but it is because your ground is barren, and ye will not nourish the tree, therefore ye cannot have the fruit thereof.
We even learn in the Bible about a man that cast out devils without the authority of the priesthood and how the Savior reacted upon hearing of this man:
Mark 9:38 ¶And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us.
39 But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.
40 For he that is not against us is on our part.
41 For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.
Here we see that a man, who did not have priesthood authority, invoked the name of Christ in helping another, and was not considered “against” Christ.
I was introduced to energy work in 2010, and it was a walk of faith for me. I knew the intent was for good, but I was not sure how it fit into the gospel realm. Was it in opposition to the priesthood authority and therefore still evil? If not, from where did the power originate?
I know now after “experimenting” and “planting the seed” that energy is simply a substance that we cannot see, but is, in fact real. Most importantly, it is not inherently good or evil, it just is.
As a daughter of God, I know that I am able to utilize my faith in the Savior’s Atonement and use this unseen energy to help “bear one another’s burdens”, and “comfort those that stand in need of comfort” (Mosiah 18:8 and 9). I know that utilizing energy helps me magnify my God-given gift of healing. This brings me closer to my Heavenly Father and my brother, Jesus Christ and gives me greater love and compassion toward my fellow man.
I also know that there are those that oppose our Lord and Savior that will choose to use energy to create great signs and miracles in the Last Days in an effort to deceive. We must be very careful in discerning the intent of those that use energy. I have fervently prayed for wisdom and discernment while I have been taught and have studied energy healing. My aim has been to recognize and embrace truths and discard the falsehoods and philosophies of men that can be part of the energy healing world.
If you have found yourself unwilling to entertain the idea that energy healing could be of God, I would invite you to simply allow the seed to be planted. Search the scriptures, ponder, and seek wisdom from God. Please do not be hasty and choose to cast out a good seed because of neglect or barren ground.
Though I believe I have the gift of healing, and have my own energy healing modality, I am NOT the healer. I am simply a conduit for that awesome power that fills our universe and brings healing in its wings. Its source, is the Savior of the World, Jesus Christ, who is the Master Healer. I love Him and I am in constant awe and gratitude that He allows me to serve Him with the gifts He has given me.
